One of the most popular ways to immigrate to Canada is through Express Entry.

What is Express Entry

Express Entry is the online system managed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, which is used to determine if an applicant is eligible for immigration. It uses a “pool” of candidates, ranked by points, who are eligible/interested in applying for immigration to Canada. Each candidate is scored by their past experience, education, age and adaptability. These scores determine whether the candidate should be invited to apply for immigration. About 100,000 foreign nationals have immigrated to Canada through the Express Entry System.

Express Entry

On average, every two weeks, the government releases invitations to apply for immigration. These applicants are chosen based on their ranking in the pool of applicants. If an applicant receives an invitation to apply for immigration, they then have 60 days to submit their application, along with all of the necessary documents and fees.

The EE serves three immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades, and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program.

Federal Skilled Worker

To be able to qualify for this program, candidates must have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience in the past 10 years in one of the eligible occupations. The eligible occupations are determined by National Occupation Classification (NOC) and must be in the NOC levels 0, A or B.

Canadian Experience Class

Candidates in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) must have one year of full-time or equivalent paid work experience in Canada in 3 years prior to applying for immigration. The candidate’s work experience must be closely related to NOC 0, A or B.

Federal Skilled Trades

To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades program, candidates must have a Certificate of Qualification from the province or territory where they intend to settle. The provinces and territories issue these certificates to people who successfully complete training programs as well as pass exams under their provincial/territorial apprenticeship systems. Alternatively, candidates may get a job offer from a Canadian employer offering them a position in their trade.

Provincial Nominee Program and Express Entry

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a program where provinces/territories can nominate potential immigrants for immigration to Canada. However, the nominee must also qualify under the Express Entry system. The advantage of being nominated by a province or territory is that you can get 600 points for the nomination, which almost guarantees the invitation to apply for permanent residence. There are about twenty provincial streams that are now connected with Express Entry.
